About the REF

Our strategy is to maximise the distinctiveness of our contribution to scholarship internationally, shaping the future of our disciplines and enabling excellent academic enquiry to reach into the heart of society.

In Literature we focus on the critical articulation of texts across a broad range of periods and cultural forms and our unique contribution to editorial and digital humanities research.

The University's purchase of the Cardiff Rare Books collection (14,000 items from the 15th to the 20th centuries) has opened significant new opportunities for staff and student research. The School has also made the strategic decision to invest its creative and critical writing activity as an innovative contributor to interdisciplinary research.

In Language and Communication, we use linguistic theory and a wide range of methods to explore how language works as a system, and how it is used to express identity and reflect and mould attitudes.

We apply our research to important social challenges, to generate improvements in diverse areas including language learning, Alzheimer's care, multicultural interaction, police-public interaction and social inclusion.

We are committed to the development of the next generation of literature and language scholars and are proud to be part of the AHRC-funded South, West and Wales Consortium's Doctoral Training Programme, and to host Cardiff's linguistics pathway in the All-Wales ESRC Doctoral Training Centre.
