The Casamance situation affects young people

An article on IRIN NEWS about SENEGAL: Youth who refuse to farm shows how the continuing situation in Casamance is affecting the younger generation. The problem of village youth migrating to towns is a long established pattern and the lack of young workers in  Casamance is exacerbating the poverty of the region. A region which should be helping to feed the rest of Senegal is now suffering 60% poverty. The article makes sad reading.

ZIGUINCHOR, 4 November 2009 (IRIN) – Landmines and armed attacks in Senegal’s Casamance region are preventing farmers from maximizing production from the region’s fertile soil, but there is another problem, too: not enough young people are taking up farming, residents and experts say.
