Conflict resolution is a major part of develoment in Africa. However, it is sometimes difficult to find training and training materials. This manual helps to meet that need and is intended as a training manual for trainers.
About the Manual
Training of trainers manual: conflict transformation and peacebuilding in Rwanda by Ayindo,B. ; Jenner,J.
Produced by: US Agency for International Development (2008)
Development practice has increasingly recognised the importance of conflict resolution in recent years. Techniques and methods that can prevent, mitigate or resolve conflict are now necessary to ensure ‘project sustainability’. Such skills can be central to ensuring that a diverse range of actors, whether government officials or community representatives, continue to support a programme of work.
This guide for trainers argues that the fundamental nature of ‘conflict resolution’ and ‘peacebuilding’ means that an understanding of peace and conflict is needed in order to fully appreciate the ‘resolution’ process as well as an understanding of the ‘tools’ and ‘techniques’. It aims to offer such a holistic approach, firstly through an introduction to conflict theory, then by introducing some practical approaches. Although primarily aimed at those involved with resolving land disputes in Rwanda, this manual can be used by all those interested in conflict resolution.
The guide covers:
- the nature and functions of conflict
- African indigenous traditions
- tools for conflict analysis
- conflict resolution terms and definitions
- roles played in conflict situations
- cultural aspects influencing conflict resolution
- mediation techniques – active listening; problem-solving; agreement
