About the conference

The South Eastern Regional Seminar on African Studies (SERSAS) and the South East Africa Network (SEAN) are pleased to announce an initial call for papers for a joint conference to be hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on April 23 and 24, 2010.

The call for papers is open in terms of topics and methodologies to any aspect and region of Africa, though the general theme for the conference will be “Faith, Art, and the Politics of Belonging in Africa.” SERSAS/SEAN invites the participation of advanced undergraduate and graduate students in addition to faculty.

Multi-media presentations are welcome.  SERSAS also awards the Jim Brown Prize for the best paper presented by a graduate student at the conference.  This award is 100$.  The program will include a welcome reception on Friday night, and a full program of papers on Saturday, including a special roundtable discussion on the challenges of area studies in the 21st century.

Registration fees are 20$ for faculty, and 10$ for graduate students.  These fees can be paid at the conference.  SEAN and SERSAS welcome participation from scholars outside of North America, but unfortunately cannot provide any financial support for travel and lodging.

The final deadline for submissions is 15 February 2010.  Interested scholars are invited to submit an abstract of approximately 250-500 words to each of the following members of SEAN and SERSAS conference coordination committee:
