Obituary

From: Information Desk <info@oyasaf.org>
Date: December 28, 2009

Prof. Lamidi Fakeye passed on to the great beyond on Christmas day (25th December, 2009) and has since been buried in Ila Orogun in Osun state, Nigeria.

We are deeply touched because he collaborated with OYASAF in achieving its goal of curating the largest collection of Fakeye’s work in the world. Our greatest regret is that we did not finish the planned book on his art and his history with the use of the large volume of Fakeye’s work held by us. The book is currently at the last stage of its editing and is expected to be released by mid 2010.

We at OYASAF have since lit a seven days candle for the repose of his soul and acceptance by God. Nigeria has lost a great art ambassador, whose works can be found in major museums and universities in the world with the greatest concentration in the USA —– the country that gave him the greatest accolade and encouragement for his creativity. We join in mourning the loss of this great UNESCO “Living human treasure” and global ambassador.

We grief with his family and hope Nigeria would consider giving him a post humous award regarding this great legend who contributed selflessly in promoting Nigeria’s contribution to the world of artistic talents.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. AMEN.
